All animals are known for their unpredictability, rarely staying still for long. That’s why we rely on high-speed cameras capable of capturing multiple frames per second. For instance, we use cameras that can shoot at least 9 FPS (frames per second) in RAW format, allowing us to capture a series of images in rapid succession. This technique ensures that we never miss that perfect moment, even when it happens in the blink of an eye.

In addition to a fast camera, we use lenses with wide apertures, such as F/1.8 or F/1.6. These lenses create a beautifully shallow depth of field, which not only helps to blur out any distracting backgrounds but also makes the subject stand out clearly, even in challenging lighting conditions. This is particularly useful when photographing animals like black cats or dogs against dark backgrounds, as it provides just the right amount of separation and focus.

When photographing animals, flexibility and quick reactions are key. That’s why we often shoot handheld, especially with pets like cats and birds, which can be more timid and unpredictable. A tripod can be limited in such situations, so we prefer the freedom to move and adjust quickly to keep up with their movements.

Our go-to camera setting for pet photography is shutter priority mode (S/Tv). This mode allows us to quickly adjust the shutter speed based on the pet’s behavior, ensuring we capture the best possible shot. For active pets, we use a fast shutter speed, such as 1/400th of a second or faster, to eliminate any motion blur and keep the action crisp and clear.
